(X) There were thunders and lightnings.
(O) There was thunder and lightning.
Note: When only one thing is meant we say "a clap of thunder" and "a flash(or bolt) of lightning".

463. Machinery
(X) They're now using new machineries.
(O) They're now using new machinery.
Note: Machinery is a singular noun and always takes a singular verb and pronoun. 
We can say "a piece of machinery" or "pieces of machinery".
