(Mon) VW's new electric model takes battle to Tesla

Volkswagen's battle with Tesla just got real. "So it's now time to officially launch the pre-booking phase. Ladies and gentlemen, the ID3." The German giant on Wednesday started taking pre-orders for the first model in its new family of electric vehicles. The ID3, still slightly disguised, is supposed to beat Elon Musk's offerings on value. Customers can place deposits now for first deliveries in mid-2020. Early models don't look so cheap though. The first IDs will be luxuriously equipped examples priced at about 40,000 euros, or about 45,000 dollars. Only later will more economical versions be available. That's because VW and Tesla face the same challenge. Electric car batteries are expensive, meaning it's hard to make cheap models at a profit. VW has a potential ace to play though. It's got much more experience than Tesla at making cars in serious volume. "Over the coming years, we intend to deliver more than 100,000 IDs each year." Musk meanwhile has struggled to scale up production of his more affordable car, the Model 3. Meanwhile VW has dozens more electric models in the pipeline. It's been spurred to act by the damage to its reputation over emissions cheating. Now the question is whether German experience will beat Californian innovation.

"It's time to go back to the moon - this time, to stay." Jeff Bezos on Thursday unveiled a planned mission to the moon with his rocket company Blue Origin. Bezos unveiled a mockup of a lunar lander spacecraft and discussed a strategy tailored to the U.S. government's renewed push to establish a lunar outpost in just five years. "It's the stated policy of this administration and the United States of America to return American astronauts to the moon within the next five years. I love this. It's the right thing to do." The Bezos announcement came about two months before the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. The Amazon founder and world's richest man said that the lander, named Blue Moon, could deliver payloads to the moon's surface. Bezos described the lander as a nearly two-story tall spacecraft that can deploy four smaller lunar rovers on the moon's surface. “A very fundamental long-range problem is that we will run out of energy on Earth. The good news is, if we move out into the solar system, for all practical purposes, we have unlimited resources.” Bezos, who has talked about his broader vision of enabling a future in which millions of people live and work in space, is angling to become a leading player in space exploration and win business from the U.S. government… though has been the target of repeated criticism from President Donald Trump. The rare media event for the billionaire comes a few months after he accused the National Enquirer of trying to blackmail him.

(Wed) Ajax shares slump after shock Champions League exit

This moment has proved very costly for some share traders. Ajax beaten by England's Tottenham Hotspur in the closing seconds of their Champions League soccer semifinal on Wednesday night. The Dutch club had been three goals up on aggregate, only to succumb to a miraculous Tottenham comeback. Joy for supporters of the London team, but not for Ajax shareholders. Shares in the Dutch side down as much as a fifth on Thursday. They had risen about that much after beating Tottenham in the semifinal first leg a week earlier. Defeat now carries a very literal price for Ajax. They miss out on millions of dollars in extra prize money and ticket sales. It's still not a bad year for the club's shareholders though. Ajax stock up about 50 percent over the past year. It gained as an exciting young team made progress in the Champions League. They beat giants Juventus and Real Madrid along the way. Right now though, there's only heartbreak for Ajax fans, and shareholders.

(Thu) Google launches $399 Pixel phone, more U.S. carriers will sell it

While some tech companies focus on consumers who can shell out on the pricier smart phones, Google is now making a pitch at the more affordable market. Priced as low as 399 US dollars, its new Pixel 3a smart phone is about half the price of its current models. "To support the latest technology, everyone's phones are getting more and more expensive so we challenged ourselves to see if we could optimize our software and A.I. to work great on more affordable hardware." The new Pixel 3a will have one front camera instead of two and no wireless charging option. Since hitting the market three years ago, the Pixel's been a slow seller compared to Apple and Samsung's phones. Those companies spend much more on advertising, offer multiple pricing options and ensure wide distribution. Now Google is looking to close the gap, announcing that along with Verizon currently, other major US wireless carriers will also start selling its phones.

(Fri) Burger King grills ‘unhappy’ meals

"Sometimes you feel sad, scared, crappy. All I ask is that you let me feel my way." In this video, Burger King takes on mental health, telling viewers it's OK to be themselves and not feel happy. Its customers who are used to having it their way can now feel their way with what the restaurant chain calls "Real Meals" - a burger, fries and drink that come in one of five boxes to capture their moods that moment - ranging from blue to salty to something we can't say on air. The video it released on Youtube depicts young people facing tough times, ranging from a bullied teenager to a man worried about paying off his student loans. Burger King partnered with the non-profit organization, Mental Health America, to launch the initiative in May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month. The meals are limited to select locations in five cities. The campaign is a dig at arch rival McDonald's, which is known for its "Happy Meals" for kids. It comes at a time of slowing sales at Burger King.

IM Pei - celebrated architect behind Louvre pyramid dead at 102

IM Pei, whose modern designs and high-profile projects made him one of the best-known and most prolific architects of the 20th century, has died. He was 102. A spokesman at Pei’s New York architecture firm confirmed his death to the Associated Press. Pei, whose portfolio included a controversial renovation of Paris’ Louvre Museum and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, died overnight, his son Chien Chung Pei told the New York Times. Ieoh Ming Pei, the son of a prominent banker in China, left his homeland in 1935, moving to the US and studying architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard. After teaching and working for the US government, he went to work for a New York developer in 1948 and started his own firm in 1955.
