(Mon) U.S. manufacturing shrinks in August
미국 제조업 8월에 위축
The U.S. manufacturing sector contracted in August for the first time since 2016 - HIT by worries about a weakening global economy and rising trade tensions between China and the United States. The Institute for Supply Management - OR ISM - said Tuesday its WIDELY WATCHED manufacturing index fell to 49.1% last month. Any reading under 50 indicates a contraction. The news comes as the new round of U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods kicked in and sent the equities market lower at the market open Tuesday. The ISM data dealt stocks a further blow , knocking the Dow down more than 400 points, and it also sent Treasury yields tumbling.

In the wake of a massacre in a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas last month that left 22 people dead – and other mass shootings including this weekend’s attack in Odessa, Texas – Walmart said on Tuesday it would discontinue sales of ammunition for handguns and short-barrel rifles. While short-barrel ammunition is commonly used for hunting, they can also be used in military-style weapons with high-capacity magazines. Walmart — the largest U.S. arms retailer — also said it would discontinue handgun sales in Alaska… the only state that Walmart sells these guns. Walmart has already ended sales of assault rifles and raised the minimum age for gun purchases to 21 but was under pressure to do more after El Paso and the recent deaths of two employees shot by another associate at a Walmart in Southaven, Mississippi. In a letter to associates, Chief Executive Officer Doug McMillon said the incidents are so concerning that WalMart is quote: "requesting that customers no longer openly carry firearms into our stores or Sam’s Clubs in states where “open carry” is permitted." Despite Tuesday’s changes - The retailer said it would continue to cater to hunting and sport shooting enthusiasts by selling long barrel deer rifles and shotguns.

UK factories are getting a lot less busy. Manufacturing contracted at its fastest pace in seven years last month. The Purchasing Mangers' Index for the sector dropped to 47.4. That's a full point lower than forecast in a Reuters poll of economists. It's also way below the 50-point line that divides growth and contraction. Experts say it's partly a hangover from the stockpiling boom in the early months of the year. Firms had stocked up ahead of the original March deadline for Brexit. Since then they've been running down those inventories. A global slowdown isn't helping either. Those factors explain why Britain's overall economy contracted in the second quarter. Further shrinkage in the third quarter would officially mean the economy is in recession. By the time those numbers come out in November, Brexit will - in theory at least - have happened.
(Thu) China to exempt Tesla cars from sales tax

Tesla is getting a break in China. The automaker learned Friday that its electric vehicles will be exempt from a 10 percent sales tax. The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology made the announcement on its website. No reason was provided for the exemption , which according to Tesla's estimates, shaves off up to nearly $14,000 from the purchase of a car in China. That reduction could offset any price hikes Tesla might have to tack on if Beijing goes through with planned retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods. China has become an important market for Tesla. Although the company doesn't give out official statistics , one consultancy firm estimates nearly 24,000 Tesla cars were sold in China between January to July, which is nearly double what it sold the year before. To meet demand, Tesla is investing in a factory in Shanghai, which it plans to quickly ramp up to produce 250,000 vehicles a year inside that country. Shares of Tesla jumped as high as five percent on the tax-relief news.

Huawei is pressing ahead with plans to launch a new flagship phone in Europe. The Mate 30 will be an update of its current Mate 20 handset. It's set to debut on September 18. Just one problem though. Huawei can't use Google's popular apps. The Chinese phone maker has been blacklisted by the U.S. since mid-May. That means new devices can't be sold with Google apps and services. U.S. companies can apply for an exemption from the ban on supplying Huawei. The Commerce Department has received more than 130 such applications. But none have yet been granted, and Google won't say whether it even applied. Now lawyers say Huawei can probably use an open source version of Google's Android operating system without falling foul of the ban. But the same may not be true of Google apps, such as mapping. For Huawei, there's a lot riding on the new phone. Since the U.S. ban, its market share outside China has tumbled. In Europe it fell to just over 19 percent in the second quarter. That's down from near 25 percent in the previous three months.

* Prosecution charges wife of justice minister nominee with certificate fabrication
The wife of justice minister nominee Cho Kuk was indicted on Friday over allegations that she fabricated a school certificate for her daughter. The prosecution filed a formal charge against Cho's wife, a professor surnamed Chung, without summoning her for its probe into a series of corruption allegations involving Cho's family. Chung, 57, a Dongyang University professor, was accused of forging a school president's award certificate in 2012 to help her daughter enter a medical school in 2014. The move is expected to deal a blow to Cho, who attended a parliamentary confirmation hearing Friday, nearly one month after he was nominated to lead the justice ministry. State prosecutors swiftly proceeded with the indictment as a seven-year statute of limitations over such fabrication charges expired at midnight.
