(1) 01142021 - Riot? Insurrection? Words matter in describing Capitol siege

At first, viewed from a distance, it was a rally or protest. Then it became an assault, a riot, an insurrection, domestic terrorism or even a coup attempt. The language used by the American media to describe last week¡¯s Capitol siege proves one thing whatever your perspective: Words matter. The coverage has sent Americans scurrying to the dictionary and news organizations carefully considering terminology. The use of ¡°riot¡± as a descriptor is almost universally accepted, even though the word has become fraught with racial connotations and despite the relatively gradual way the story unfolded. ¡°Some stories evolve and reveal themselves over the course of hours and days and this was one of those stories,¡± said Al Ortiz, vice president of standards and practices at CBS News. The first images most people saw on Jan. 6 were from above, with attendees at a rally where President Donald Trump spoke who eventually moved, like sea water in a tsunami, toward and around the U.S. Capitol. So, initially, they were called protesters. But it became clear, as many breached the Capitol and lawmakers fled for safety, that more was happening. The Associated Press told staff members that protest was too mild a word. Phrases like ¡°mob,¡± ¡°riot¡± and ¡°insurrection¡± were appropriate, noted John Daniszewski, vice president and editor at large for standards.

(2) 01162021 - Bill Gates becomes largest private farmland owner in US with 242,000 acres

Bill Gates now owns the most farmland of anyone in the United States, according to a recent report from The Land Report. The outlet reported this week that Gates, 65, owns 268,984 acres of land combined across 19 states. Of that number, 242,000 acres are of farmland, 25,750 acres are of transitional land and 1,234 acres are of recreational land, according to the report. States Gates owns land in include Washington, California, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, North Carolina, Florida, Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana. Of those states, Gates owns the most land in Louisiana, where he is proprietor of more than 69,000 acres. The transitional land he owns in Arizona is reportedly being built into a suburb.

(3) 01162021 - Trump's presidency not just a blip in US foreign policy

President-elect Joe Biden¡¯s plan to scrap President Donald Trump¡¯s vision of ¡°America First¡± in favor of ¡°diplomacy first¡± will depend on whether he¡¯s able to regain the trust of allies and convince them that Trumpism is just a blip in the annals of U.S. foreign policy. It could be a hard sell. From Europe to the Middle East and Asia, Trump¡¯s brand of transactional diplomacy has alienated friends and foes alike, leaving Biden with a particularly contentious set of national security issues.

(4) 01192021 - SAT doing away with optional essay, subject tests

The College Board said Tuesday it will eliminate the optional essay from the SAT and do away with subject tests amid a changing college admissions landscape. ¡°The pandemic has highlighted the importance of being innovative and adaptive to what lies ahead,¡± according to a statement from the not-for-profit College Board, which said it wanted to make the SAT more flexible and reduce the demands on students. The coronavirus pandemic has forced the widespread cancellation of group testing sessions for the SAT and rival ACT since March, leading numerous schools to eliminate testing requirements for the current admissions cycle. Others have permanently made entrance exams an optional part of applying to college. The three-hour, multiple choice SAT measures math and English language arts proficiency. The optional essay adds about another hour and is scored separately, as were the lesser required subject tests given in specific areas like chemistry or foreign languages.
