National Handwriting Day is on January 23rd. Its aim is to highlight the importance of the skill of handwriting.
* aim = 목적, 목표/ highlight = 강조하다
* be to 부정사 (be to 용법)
* ~할 예정이다 (be expected to ~)
* ~해야 한다 (must 또는 have to ~)
* ~하는 게 좋다 (should 조언/충고)
* ~가 가능하다 (can)
* ~가 될 운명이야, (나중에) ~하게 돼
* ~라면 (조건문에서 were to ~의 형태)
* ~하려면 (조건문에서 목표를 이루기 위해 해야만 하는)
He is to arrive here this evening. (예정 - 그는 오늘 저녁에 여기에 도착할 예정이다.)
You are to finish this work by six. (의무 - 너는 여섯시까지 이 일을 끝내야 한다.)
No one was to be seen on the street. (가능 - 아무도 거리에서 볼 수 없었다.)
That fellow is to blame(= to be blamed). (당연 - 그 녀석이 욕을 먹어야 한다.)
He was never to see his father again. (운명 - 그는 아버지를 다시는 보지 못할 운명이었다.)
* Examples *
1. 그 회의는 오늘 오후에 개최될 예정이다.
The meeting is to be held this afternoon.
2. 자식은 부모님의 말씀에 따라야 한다.
Children are to obey their parents.
3. 그 날은 한국의 운명을 결정하는 날이었다.
The day was to decide the fate of Korea.
4. 어떤 것도 노력 없이는 절대 얻을 수 없다.
Nothing is ever to be attained without labor.
