[Debate/토론] (HM-067) Demanding mom is too much for six kids to handle

[Problem]

저희는 자녀가 6명인 가족입니다. 저희 연로한 어머님은 저희 자식들 중 한 명과 한 번에 3개월 내지 10개월씩 함께 살고 계셔요. 저희 6명 가운데 한 사람만 어머님이 편안하게 살 수 있는 방과 이상적인 환경을 지닌 전업 주부랍니다. 하지만 그 자매는 엄마를 무기한으로 모시는 것은 거부합니다.
We are a family of six children. Our elderly mother lives with each of us three to 10 months at a time. Out of the six of us, only one is a homemaker who has the room and ideal setting for her to live comfortably. However, she refuses to have Mom permanently.

저희 자식들 중 나머지는 낮에는 어머니와 함께 할 수 없게 하는 직업을 갖고 있어요. 하지만 저희들 모두는 어머님을 양로원에 보내는 것은 당치 않은 일이라고 합의했습니다.
The rest of us have jobs that don't allow us to be with her during the day. Yet we all agreed that putting Mom in a nursing home would be out of the question.

제가 일을 할 필요가 없다면, 제 자신이 어머님을 영구히 보살펴 드릴 것입니다. 저는 어머님이 함께 살기에 힘들 수 있다는 것을 인정합니다. 어머니는 상대방에게 바보 같은 느낌이 들게 하거나 온갖 종류의 심부름을 하라고 고집을 피우실 수 있으며, 누군가가 자신의 돈을 가져갔다고 의심을 하십니다. 저는 어떻게 해야 할지 모르겠어요. - 오하이오 주에서 여섯 중 하나 
If I didn't have to work, I'd take care of her permanently myself. I admit that she can be difficult to live with. She can cut you down, insist you do all kinds of errands and is suspicious about someone taking her money. I don't know what to do. - ONE OF SIX IN OHIO

[Advice]

여섯 중 하나이신 독자님께: 어머님께서 늘 이런 식의 상태로 지내오셨나요? 그러시다면, 아마도 한 번 더 가족 회의를 하셔야 할 때인 것 같습니다. 힘들고 의심 많은 부모를 떠안는 부담을 한 자매가 모두 짊어지기를 기대하는 것은 그 자매에게 공정하지 못합니다.
DEAR ONE OF SIX: Has your mother always been this way? If so, then perhaps it's time for another family meeting. To expect one sister to shoulder the entire burden of taking in a demanding, suspicious parent is unfair to her.

만약 어머님의 성격에 변화가 있었다면, 어머님께 무슨 문제가 있는지 알아 보기 위해 어머님께서 신경학적인 평가를 받게 해 드리는 것을 고려하세요. 어머님께서 병을 앓고 계신지 여부에 불구하고 노인 전문 정신과 의사가 도움이 되는 조언을 줄 수 있을 것입니다. 그리고 독자님 가족 모두가 실행 가능하면서 어머님을 위한 영구적 주거 환경에 관해 결정하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있을 것입니다. 
If there have been changes in your mother's personality, consider having her be neurologically evaluated to see if there is something wrong with her. A geriatric psychiatrist could give you some helpful input regardless of whether she's ill ─ and help you all decide upon a workable, permanent living situation for her.

[어휘 & 표현]

* demanding 일이 부담이 큰, 힘든 (= A demanding job or task requires a lot of your time, energy, or attention)
e.g.) The work is physically demanding. 그 일은 신체적인 부담이 크다.
 
* homemaker 전업 주부 (= A woman who works at home cleaning, cooking etc. and does not have another job; housewife)
e.g.) My father is a businessman, and my mother is a homemaker. 아버님께서는 사업가시고, 어머님은 전업 주부십니다.
 
* be out of the question 당치 않다, 말도 안 된다 (= unthinkable, nonsense, unreasonable, improper) 
e.g.) That's out of the question.말도 안 돼요.   
 
* cut (somebody) down (= to make somebody feel or look stupid, especially in front of other people) 
e.g.) He always cuts her down in front of his friends. 그는 친구들 앞에서 항상 그녀를 바보처럼 보이게 만든다.
 
* geriatric (명사 앞에만) 노인 의료와 관련된 (= relating to the medical care and treatment of old people)   
e.g.) a geriatric hospital 노인 병원 
 
* input (일, 사업 등을 성공시키기 위한) 조언[시간/지식 등](의 제공); 투입 
e.g.) Her specialist input to the discussions has been very useful. 이들 논의에 대한 그녀의 전문가적 조언은 아주 유용했다.
