Can Dual Citizens Be Good Americans?

Last week, Politico reported that Representative Michele Bachmann, a Republican from Minnesota, had become a Swiss citizen in March, a month after her husband, Marcus, the son of Swiss immigrants, registered with the Swiss consulate. After taking some heat in conservative circles for her dual allegiance, she withdrew her Swiss citizenship. Can dual citizens be good Americans? Should dual citizenship be allowed?

이중 시민권을 가진 사람이 좋은 미국 시민이 될 수 있나요? 이중국적이 허용되어야 하나요?

1) Citizenship as It Should Be
Dual citizenship represents a kind of freedom of association, a form of voluntary affiliation to be protected, not condemned.

2) An Exclusive Relationship
Congress should prohibit dual citizenship, not to punish people but to send a message about what a citizen's duty entails.

3) A Have and Have-Not Issue
The weakening of the nation state and its command of singular loyalties is a loss of the only kind of tie that might counter the money and influence of elites.

4) The Solution to ‘Brain Drain’
The willingness to bestow membership goods on those with extraordinary talent has become a competitive tool.

5) Citizens Without Borders
The growing recognition of dual citizenship reflects the centrality of migration in our times and the fact that people live their lives across national boundaries.
