Do Gay Celebrities Have an Obligation to Come Out?

In a message in which he came out on Monday, Anderson Cooper pointed to the conflict that gay celebrities face: “In a perfect world, I don’t think it’s anyone else’s business,” he wrote, “but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted.” (Many celebrities seem to be standing up lately, sometimes almost as an afterthought.) Do gay celebrities have a moral obligation to come out, to combat homophobia? Or do gay stars have the same right as anyone else to keep their romantic lives private, as Cooper has for the past 20 years?

동성애 유명인들은 동성애자임을 밝히고 동성애 혐오증을 싸워야 할 도덕적 의무가 있나요?
아니면 다른 사람들이 그들의 연애사를 비밀로 하듯 같은 권리를 갖고 있나요?

1) Be a Hero, Not Part of the Problem
When I was a teenager, there were zero out role models; we survived on rumors. But the world is a better place when people aren’t lying.

2) For Gay Athletes, a Harsh Spotlight
An openly gay sports star could change the attitudes of older, more homophobic generations.

3) It’s a Personal Choice, Not a Moral One
If celebrities want to stay in the closet, they’re not being immoral. Just silly. Life is better after coming out.
