[기초독해] 구문(002) - 부정사 (가주어/가목적어)

* 부정사의 대용을 하는 형식상의 주어와 목적어.

I think it difficult to know oneself.
첫째 문장의 to know는 진주어, it은 가주어.
둘째 문장의 to know는 진목적어, it은 가목적어.
* Examples
거짓말하는 것은 나쁘다.
It is wrong to tell a lie.
그의 비위를 맞추기가 힘들다.
It is difficult to please him.
일을 아는 것과 행하는 것은 다르다.
It is one thing to know a thing, and another (thing) to do it.
나는 거짓말하는 것은 나쁘다고 생각한다.
I think it wrong to tell a lie.
나는 그의 요청을 거절하는 것이 어렵다고 생각했다.
I found it difficult to refuse his request.
나는 모든 사실을 그에게 말해야 할 의무를 느꼈다.
I felt it my duty to tell him the whole truth.

1. It is injurious to the mind as well as to the body to be always in one place and always surrounded by the same circumstances.
* injurious = harmful 해로운/ surround = 둘러싸다/ circumstances = 환경
(해석) 언제나 한 고장에 있으며, 항상 같은 환경에 둘러싸이는 것은 신체에 대해서 뿐만 아니라 정신에 대해서도 해롭다.
2. Every man who knows how to read, has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the ways in which he exists, to make his life full, significant, and interesting.
* have it in one's power to ~ = can ~/ magnify = 확대하다/ multiply = 증가시키다/ significant = 뜻있는, 중요한
(해석) 독서하는 법을 아는 사람은 누구나 자기를 확대할 수 있고, 사는 법을 다양화 할 수 있고, 자기의 인생을 충실하고 의미 깊고 흥미 있게 할 수 있다.
