* so as to ~ 부정사 / so ~ as to 부정사


so as to 부정사 = so that 주어 + can(may) ~ = ~하기 위하여 [목적]

so ~ as to 부정사 = so ~ that = 매우 ~ 하므로 [결과]

 

He got up early so as to be in time for the first train. (그는 첫 기차 시간에 닿으려고 일찍 일어났다.)

= He got up early so that he might be in time for the first train.

He got up so early as to be in time for the first train. (그는 일찍 일어나 첫 기차 시간에 닿았다.)

= He got up so early that he was in time for the first train.

 

* Examples

1. 보다 잘 보기 위해 그는 일어났다.

He stood up so as to see better.


2. 그는 친절하게도 나에게 길을 가르쳐 주었다.

He was so kind as to show me the way.


3. 그 여자는 너무 화가 나서 말을 할 수가 없었다.

She was so angry as to be unable to speak.


4. 사람은 자기 힘에 의존하도록 습관을 길러야 한다.

A man must so train his habits as to rely upon his own powers.

* 독해

1. Some reptiles and fish have actually the power of changing the color of their skin so as to adapt themselves to their surroundings.
* reptile = 파충류/ actually = 사실상으로/ adapt = 적응시키다/ surroundings = 환경
(해석) 어떤 파충류나 물고기는 그들의 환경에 적응하기 위해 그들의 피부색을 바꾸는 능력을 실제로 가지고 있다.

2. When a child hurts his foot against a stone, he is often so unreasonably angry at the stone as to strike it.
* unreasonably = 부당하게, 비합리적으로
(해석) 어린애가 돌에 부딪쳐 자기 발을 다쳤을 때, 그 어린애는 흔히 그 돌에 어처구니없이 화를 내며 그 돌을 때린다.
