* 부정사의 부정형/ 분리부정사(split infinitive)/ 대부정사(pro-infinitive)

He pretended not to notice her. (그는 그 여자를 못 본 체했다.)

부정사의 부정형은 to앞에 부정어를 놓는다.

He failed to entirely understand it. (그는 그것을 전적으로 모두 이해하지는 못했다.)

분리부정사(split infinitive): to와 원형동사 사이에 부사가 들어가는 형이다.

cf. He failed entirely to understand it. (그는 그것을 이해하는 데 전적으로 실패했다.)

You may come with me if you want to. (오고 싶으면 같이 와도 좋다.)

대부정사(pro-infinitive): 부정사의 반복을 피하기 위해 to만 쓰는 것인데, 이는 구어에 많다.

1. 그는 간식을 하지 않기로 하고 있다.

He makes it a rule never to eat between meals.

2. 내가 열지 말라고 했는데 그 여자는 창문을 열었다.

She opened the window, though I told her not to.

3. 그 여자는 그의 도착을 눈치 채지 못한 것 같았다.

She seemed not to have noticed his arrival.

4. 감기에 걸리지 않도록 주의하여라.
Be careful not to catch cold.

1. It will be found possible to considerably improve the present wages of the miners without jeopardizing the interests of capital.
* considerably = 상당히, 어지간히/ wage = 임금/ miner = 광부/ jeopardize = 위험에 빠뜨리다, 악화시키다/ interest = 이익/ capital = 자본, 경영주
(해석) 자본 측(경영주)의 이익을 악화시킴이 없이 광부들의 임금을 상당히 개선하는 것이 가능할 수 있을 것이다.

2. All these things he did, not because he wanted to, but because he had to in order to live. The wilderness forced these things; not to have fitted himself into this kind of life would have meant certain death.
* wanted to (do)/ had to (do) in/ wilderness = 황양/ force = 강요하다/ not to have ~ = if he had not fitted himself into this kind of life, he would certainly have died/ fit = 적응하다
(해석) 이러한 것들을 그는 모두 했는데, 그것은 그가 하고 싶어서가 아니라 살기 위해서는 하지 않을 수 없었기 때문이었다. 황야가 이런 것들을 강요했던 것이다. 이런 생활에 자신을 적응시키지 않았다면 그것은 틀림없이 죽음을 의미했을 것이다.
