[기초독해] 구문(017) - 부정사 (부정사 + w/h 의문사 = 명사구)

* 부정사와 의문사가 결합하여 명사구를 이룬다.
I don't know what to do. (나는 무엇을 해야 할지 모르겠다.)
= I don't know what I should do.
I don't know whom to go with. (나는 누구와 같이 가야 할지 모르겠다.)
= I don't know who(m) I should go with.
I don't know how to do it. (나는 그것을 어떻게 하면 되는지 모르겠다.)
= I don't know how I should do it.
* Examples
1. 그는 내게 어떻게 기계를 다루는지를 나에게 말해주었다.
He told me how to work the machine.
2. 나는 가야 할지 돌아서야 할지 모른다.
I don't know whether to go or turn back.
3. 그 단어의 철자를 나에게 말해 주시오.
Tell me how to spell the word.
4. 어떻게 시작하는가가 어디에서 그칠 것인가보다 더 어렵다.
How to begin is more difficult than where to stop.
5. 누구에게 질문을 해야 할지 말씀해 주시오.
Tell me whom to ask the question.

1. A life devoted to the acquisition of wealth is useless, unless we know how to turn it into joy.
* A life (which is) devoted to/ acquisition = 획득
(해석) 돈 버는 데만 몰두한 인생은, 그것을 어떻게 즐거움으로 돌리느냐를 모르는 한, 소용이 없다.
2. What it is that constitutes the look of a gentleman is more easily felt than described. We do not know how to account for it, or to explain in what it consists.
* constitute = 구성하다/ look = 모습/ describe = 묘사하다/ account for = explain 설명하다
(해석) 신사의 모습을 구성하는 게 무엇이냐는 묘사보다 차라리 더 쉽게 느낄 수 있다. 우리는 그것을 어떻게 설명해야 할지, 혹은 그것이 무엇에 놓여 있는지 설명할 수가 없다.
