Should Workplaces Curtail E-Mail?
Atos, an international information technology services company, announced recently that it will phase out e-mails because its chief executive, Thierry Breton, considers 90 percent of them a waste of time. In its place, he said, employees should spend more time talking to each other in person or on the phone, and switch to ¡°real time¡± messaging tools, like text messages or social media. Are e-mails mostly a waste of time? Would workplaces be more productive if they tried to limit them? Why are text messages and social media preferable to e-mail?
