* 동명사의 완료형 *
시제가 본동사보다 하나 앞선다.
I regret having told it to him. (나는 그것을 그에게 말한 것을 후회한다.)
= I regret (that) I told (or have told) it to him.
I was sure of its having been done by him. (나는 그것을 그가 했다는 것을 확신했다.)
= I was sure (that) it had been done by him.
* Examples *
1. 그 여자가 자살했다는 것을 듣고 나는 놀랐다.
I am surprised to hear of her having committed suicide.
2. 그는 젊었을 때 게을렀던 것을 후회한다.
He repents of having been idle in his youth.
3. 그는 장기에 패해본 적이 없는 것을 자랑으로 여긴다.
He prides himself on never having been beaten at chess.
4. 증인은 피고를 본 것을 부인했다.
The witness denied having seen the accused.
* 독해 *
1. It was singular how highly her opinion was valued in spite of her never having attempted in any way to distinguish herself.
* singular = 특이한/ distinguish oneself = 이름을 떨치다
(해석) 그 여자가 어떤 면으로든지 이름을 내려고 결코 노력을 안 했는데도, 그 여자의 의견이 얼마나 높이 평가되었는지는 참으로 이상한 일이었다.
2. He was accused of having drowned his daughter in a well to hinder her from becoming a Catholic, and was, with his wife, sentenced to death.
* accuse = 비난하다, 고발하다/ well = 우물/ hinder = 방해하다/ sentence = 선고하다
(해석) 그는 딸이 카톨릭 교도가 되는 것을 막기 위해 딸을 우물 속에 빠뜨려 죽였다고 고소당하여, 그의 아내와 함께 사형 선고를 받았다.
