But that doesn¡¯t mean professionals don¡¯t still adhere to certain personal guidelines. What does appropriate office dress code mean today?

The good news is, because our law firm is located in San Francisco, summer doesn¡¯t present the same office wear challenges it might in warmer areas. Summer is our foggy season! But for summer associates, the law school students that work with us during the summer, and practicing lawyers alike, the dress code guidelines are simple: Use your best judgment.
By the time most people get to law school, they¡¯ve picked up a pretty good sense of what constitutes appropriate attire in a "business casual" office like ours. Law is a profession that still requires those who practice to wear suits on many occasions, including any court appearance. So there isn't usually a need to provide formal training or strict rules about dress — they are already understood.
The exception to that is our high school summer intern program. For high schoolers, we do offer some pointers about "business casual" attire during the interview process and job orientation, so that the interns are aware of these general standards. We advise our interns to dress in slacks and shirts with the addition of skirts and dresses for girls. We discourage sweat pants or T-shirts with writing or pictures, including sports jerseys, or items with large designer logos. And of course, no shorts and flip-flops.
