3D holograms to bring 2020 Olympics closer to TV viewer

Figure skating as never seen before. Beaming holograms of sports events to anywhere in the world in near real-time is the brainchild of Japanese telecoms firm NTT. "From all four directions, you can see players projected in the field moving in 3D. You can see that in the demos we've unveiled this week, like judo, karate or figure skating." The system uses multiple cameras to track participants' movements. But unlike the firm's currently available 3D hologram technology, it doesn't require sensors to be attached to athletes' bodies. NTT wants its "Kirari! For Arena" system to be ready for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

A tweet from a former swimsuit model may have cost a fashion executive his job, at least for now. Guess on Tuesday announced co-founder Paul Marciano will give up his day-to-day duties at the company on an unpaid basis while the fashion line probes accusations of improper conduct. The fallout comes after model and actress Kate Upton criticized the company in a tweet. On January 31st she wrote, 'it's disappointing that such an iconic women's brand, @Guess is still empowering Paul Marciano as their creative director #Metoo.' Upton told Time Magazine Marciano verbally harassed and touched her inappropriately when she was 18 years old, and that the behavior continued for years. Marciano and the company denied the allegations. The #MeToo movement has surged since the revelation of accusations of sexual misconduct against powerful men such as media mogul Harvey Weinstein. Guess shareholders, though, may have demanded action. The day Upton tweeted about Marciano, the stock plummeted and has not recovered. It fell further Tuesday. The company has hired an outside law firm to investigate the matter.
Coca-Cola boosts organic sales

Strong demand for vitamin water, teas and coffees boosted Coca-Cola's organic revenues in the latest quarter. Coke has been investing in these categories as consumers drift away from sugary drinks like its sodas. Net revenue fell, but that and organic sales beat analyst’s estimates. Global volume growth was flat. The world's largest soda maker swung to a loss from a profit. But that was because of a $3.6 billion charge related to the new tax law, and its adjusted earnings topped Wall Street's targets. The company has been divesting its lower-margin bottling businesses. While that cut into net revenue, it helped lift its profit margins. Renaissance Macro Research analyst April Scee, who rates Coke shares "overweight," said in a note, "In 2018, we'll see a full restage of Coke's important but struggling Diet Coke franchise. Evidence from the Coke Zero restage suggests this could meaningfully improve 2018 organic." Coca-Cola's shares, which outperformed those of rival PepsiCo last year, rose at the market open Friday. But relatively few men at publicly traded companies have been forced out so far, the notable exception being casino magnate Steve Wynn.
Chicken shortage forces KFC to close many UK stores

It wasn't finger lickin' good at this KFC restaurant in Britain. In fact there was no chicken at all, forcing the restaurant to close. And it wasn't the only one. Around half of KFC's 900 UK outlets weren't able to open for the same reason. "It's a big chain so it does seem unbelievable really. All the chicken, there are farmers, surely there's enough chickens?" "It's a chicken place so they should have enough chicken. They should be able to store it." "I thought things were pretty much automated these days. You know, as they use chicken more is ordered so obviously something's gone seriously wrong on a computer system or a manual error or something for this to happen." "Q. Apparently they couldn't get the deliveries here or to lots of other shops as well. Lots of KFCs have no chicken right now. Answer. No." KFC blamed delivery problems. Just last week it switched its contract to DHL, which said "operational issues" had caused the supply disruption. Some wondered why staff couldn't buy elsewhere, but KFC's answer to that was "we won't compromise on quality" even if it means no fried chicken at all.
McDonald's slims down Happy Meal

No more cheeseburgers in McDonald's Happy Meals. The company is removing the sandwich from its U.S. Happy Meal menu. It's also cutting back on French fries in McNugget Mighty. But it's adding water. The reason? McDonald's wants to make its food for children healthier. For the first time ever, the world's biggest fast-food chain came out with limits on calories, sodium and sugar. It plans to implement them in at least half of the Happy Meals around the world by 2022. Technomic's David Henkes. "McDonald's has been hammered for years. They're sort of the 800 pound gorilla in their fast food business, and, certainly, have been a target for activists over the past many years. And, so, this obviously is sort of a PR move to really not only improve their standing with a lot of the activists, but also to make a move that is perceived as being healthier with their menu." Consultants and franchisees say Happy Meals account for roughly 15 percent of McDonald's sales in the United States.
