[Problem]
저는 아주 멋진 어린 딸 셋을 두고 있는 엄마입니다. 하지만 최근에는 그렇게 멋있지가 않아요.
I am the mom of three wonderful little girls, but as of late not so wonderful.
남편과 저는 아이들에게 예절과 존경심을 열심히 가르치지만, 그들이 가진 것에 대해 고마워할 줄 알아야 한다는 것을 이해시킬 수 없는 것 같습니다.
My husband and I work hard to teach them manners and respect, but we can’t seem to get across to them to be grateful for what they have.
저희는 한 사람의 소득으로 살기 때문에 돈이 많지 않으며, 그럴 여유가 없어서 아이들을 자주 행복하게 해주지는 못해요. 딸 중에 하나가 받은 선물을 불만스러워 해왔는데, 지금이 두 번째랍니다.
We don’t have a lot of money because we live on one income, and we don’t spoil them often because we can’t afford to. Twice now, one of my girls has been unhappy with a gift she received.

The first one she threw away; the second she refused to even accept! This isn’t how we raised her.

I thought about doing some volunteer work with them, but I fear they are too young for it (4, 7 and 9).

고마워하시는 어머님께: 독자님의 7살과 9살 애들은 자기들보다 훨씬 적게 가진 아이들이 많다는 것을 배우기에 너무 어리지 않아요.
DEAR GRATEFUL MOM: Your 7-and 9-year-olds are NOT too young to learn that many children have far less than they do.
때때로 사람들은 자신이 얼마나 운이 좋은지 감사하기 위해 다른 사람들이 극복해야만 하는 도전들을 그들의 눈으로 직접 바라볼 필요가 있습니다.
Sometimes people need to see with their own eyes the challenges that others have to cope with in order to appreciate how fortunate they are.
제 생각에 아이들을 독자님과 함께 자원 봉사를 하도록 하시려는 독자님의 발상은 아주 탁월하신 거에요. 그리고 시작하기에 너무 이르지 않습니다.
I think your idea of having them do some volunteer work with you is an excellent one, and it is not too early to start.
