Labor Ministry names 50 companies with gender imbalance

The Ministry of Employment and Labor on Friday released a list of 50 companies lagging behind in gender equality in a country with the biggest gender wage gap among member states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Fifty companies here were categorized as those that need to take action to resolve gender imbalance in employment, up from 42 companies last year and 27 companies in 2017. For the first time since 2006, when the ministry began keeping track of gender imbalance, five state-run companies were included on the list: Korea Gas Technology Corp., Livestock Health Control Association, Korea Institute of Radiological Medical Sciences, Korea Small Business Institute and Korea Water & Wastewater Works Association.

United States to Surpass Saudi Arabia and Become World¡¯s Largest Oil Exporter

The United States will soon export more oil than Saudi Arabia and become the world¡¯s largest oil exporter for the first time in 60 years, according to projections by research firm Rystad Energy. The boom in oil, liquid natural gas, and other liquid energy exports will last for years and be enough to erase America¡¯s foreign debt and trade deficit, according to Per Magnus Nysveen, a senior partner at Rystad Energy. Rystad forecasts that the United States will export more oil than Saudi Arabia by the third quarter this year. The remarkable turnaround is being made possible by the growing production of shale oil and increased capacity for oil exports from America¡¯s Gulf Coast, according to Rystad Energy.

Trump Says He¡¯s OK With Making Daylight Saving Time Permanent

President Donald Trump said on March 11 that he is in favor of making daylight saving time permanent. ¡°Making Daylight Saving Time permanent is O.K. with me!¡± the president wrote on Twitter. Daylight saving time is the practice of advancing clocks one hour forward to increase the amount of daylight during the evening while sacrificing natural sunrise hours. The practice is currently in use in most of North America and Europe as well as parts of Australia and South America. Three Florida senators introduced legislation on March 6 that would make daylight saving time permanent throughout the United States. The bill, titled Sunshine Protection Act of 2019, is similar to one introduced by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) last year. ¡°Did you wake up feeling a little less rested this morning? Nobody likes to lose an hour of sleep. Last week I sponsored the Sunshine Protection Act to end this unnecessary tradition,¡± Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) wrote on Twitter.

Singer-songwriter Jung Joon-young has been booked on suspicion of illegally filming and propagating videos and photographs of a sexual nature, the police revealed Tuesday. The suspicions against Jung came to light during a separate investigation into Seungri, a member of the popular boy band Big Bang. On Monday, a local news outlet reported that Jung had shared illegally filmed sex videos with acquaintances on a number of occasions beginning at the end of 2015. The singer is also alleged to have shared detailed descriptions of a sexual encounter between him and a woman through a mobile messenger service, and to have shared videos. Jung allegedly victimized about 10 women in a similar manner over a period of 10 months. The police plan to question Jung in the near future and to concentrate on how the videos were filmed and shared.

Pentagon Signs Directive to Implement Trump¡¯s Transgender Military Ban

The Defense Department signed a memo on March 12 that would enforce limitations on transgender people serving in the military. The policy will take effect on April 12 and will bar most transgender individuals from serving if they require hormone treatments or transition surgery. The memo, signed by David Norquist, currently the No. 2 official at the Pentagon, will allow service secretaries to issue waivers on a case-by-case basis. President Donald Trump announced in July 2017 a ban on transgender people serving in the military. He later accepted Pentagon recommendations to limit the ban to individuals with a history of gender dysphoria, defined as ¡°those who may require substantial medical treatment,¡± and allowed some exceptions.

US grounding Boeing 737 Max 8, 9 after Ethiopia crash

President Donald Trump says the United States is issuing an emergency order grounding all Boeing 737 Max 8 and Max 9 aircraft in the wake of a crash of an Ethiopian Airliner that killed 157 people. Many nations in the world had already barred the Boeing 737 Max 8 from its airspace, but until now, the Federal Aviation Administration had been saying that it didn¡¯t have any data to show the jets are unsafe. Trump said Wednesday that the FAA would be making the announcement soon to ground the planes. He says any plane currently in the air will go to its destination and then be grounded. Trump says pilots and airlines have been notified. He says the safety of the American people is of ¡°paramount concern.¡±
