The shameful fall of Korean Air chairman
After years of being mired in controversies and scandals fit for a soap opera involving himself and his closest family members, Cho Yang-ho, chairman of South Korea’s largest air carrier, lost his board seat Wednesday after shareholders voted against extending his term as a director. Although he retains his management rights with shares held by his family, Cho becomes the first conglomerate chief ousted since the nation’s pension fund decided to actively exercise voting rights last year for responsible investing. On Wednesday morning, Korean Air shareholders voted against the airline’s proposal to extend Cho’s term as a board director for three years, with 64.1 percent in favor and 35.9 percent against during the regular shareholders meeting. Cho needed 66.66 percent in favor to retain control.
S. Korea approves 5G pricing plans
The South Korean government announced Friday it had approved mobile carriers’ pricing plans for fifth-generation wireless networks, with the third-biggest telecom company, LG Uplus, revealing that its pricing will start from 55,000 won ($48) per month. According to the Ministry of Science and ICT, the government has greenlighted SK Telecom’s pricing for 5G services. SK Telecom is the only mobile carrier required to obtain the government’s approval for new pricing plans. While the details of SKT and KT’s pricing plans will be kept under wraps until they hold a press conference early next week, LG Uplus said the pricing scheme will start from 55,000 won per month for 9 gigabytes.
Third-generation chaebol scions booked on drug use charges
The police have booked a number of third-generation scions of South Korean family-owned conglomerates on suspicions they bought and used illegal substances even as the investigation into more drug dealers and buyers widens. A grandson of SK Group founder Chey Jong-gun was apprehended Monday for allegedly buying liquid marijuana, the police said Monday. He is suspected of buying the drug, which is illegal in Korea, on 15 occasions and smoking it between March and May last year. He tested positive for marijuana use and has admitted to the charges. The police said they will seek an arrest warrant for him. A grandson of Hyundai Group founder Chung Ju-yung was also booked on suspicions of purchasing marijuana between March and May last year. Chung, who is now staying abroad, is set to be called in for questioning.
Son Heung-min makes history by scoring Tottenham's 1st goal at new home stadium
Tottenham Hotspur's South Korean forward Son Heung-min has engraved his name in history as he scored the club's first-ever goal at their new home stadium. Son became the first player to score a goal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Wednesday (local time) after he hit the net against Crystal Palace in the 55th minute with his left foot. It was also his 12th goal in the English Premier League this season. He now has 17 goals for Spurs across all competitions this season.
