Lonely? Then meet Qoobo. The newest comfort robot from Japan's Yukai Engineering was invented after an employee moved to Japan but was unable to bring her cats. It's one of more than 200 new products to be showcased at CES Las Vegas - a consumer electronics fest that this year puts AI and 5G technologies right at the front. Karen Chupka of the Consumer Technology Association: "They're really two technology trends that are impacting every industry segment . And some of the growth areas that we have at this year's show include everything from health and wellness to smart cities. Our c-space area which focuses on content, entertainment and branding, our start-up area." Many of the products are hands on. Canada's Bartesian is going after cocktail makers who want to automate the mixing process with their cocktail-hour vending machine. Hachi Infinite - from China's Guangzhou Puppyrobot Technology Company - projects touch screens onto any flat surface. They say that by using AI recognition , it can help children to spell. Perso, from French beauty care company L'Oreal, is a smart system to personalize skincare and cosmetic regimes via an app. Products are mixed and then dispensed through a motorized cartridge. "The exciting thing about CES is you expect the unexpected . When you walk around that show floor, there's going to be something that you never expected to see at the show. And it's going to make your jaw drop and you're going to walk out of there more excited about the future." As for the present, some four and a half thousand companies and 170,000 visitors are expected - from over 160 countries. After Sunday's media preview event, the show opens its doors to the wider public on Tuesday.

It's become a New Year tradition in Japan. Buyers gathered Sunday at Tokyo fish market to purchase some expensive tuna. Really expensive. This fish eventually went for about 1.8 million dollars. The buyer was Kiyoshi Kimura, owner of a sushi restaurant chain. At over six thousand dollars per kilogram, the fish had better be good. But for Kimura, it's maybe no big deal. Last year he set the all-time record for a single fish, buying one tuna for about three million dollars. This year's must seem like a relative bargain.

Hard-charging Tesla has set a date for when the Chinese public can get their hands on the Model 3 sedans made in China: January 7 - two weeks before the start of the Chinese New Year. The $50,000 mass market electric cars will be delivered at an event at its Shanghai plant. The deliveries will come roughly a year after Tesla broke ground on its only plant outside the United States. Production began in October. Tesla eventually plans to turn out 250,000 vehicles per year once it adds the Model Y crossover to its lineup. Just last week, the automaker delivered its first Model 3s in China to 15 employees. Tesla's high-flying stock revved higher at the market open Thursday, adding on to its 37% gain last year. Brokerage firm Canaccord Genuity hiked its price target to $515, forecasting the stock will surge more than 20% this year. The analyst says China will become an important driver for the company. Tesla says it'll ramp up deliveries in January and double the number of charging stations and service centers in China this year.

On the last day of 2019, U.S. President Donald Trump finally put a date on when he'll sign his Phase 1 trade deal with China - January 15th. Trump tweeted Tuesday that the ceremony would take place that day at the White House with "high level representatives of China," but didn't specify just who would be present. Trump also said he would later go to Beijing to start negotiations on Phase 2. Washington struck the limited Phase 1 deal earlier this month. Under the deal, the U.S. is expected to cut tariffs on Chinese goods and China is expected to buy more American farm, energy and manufactured products. U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said the deal also includes stronger Chinese legal protections for U.S. patents, trademarks and copyrights. Trump launched the trade war a year-and-a-half ago. The ensuing imposition of tit-for-tat tariffs has rocked stock markets and crimped economic growth worldwide.

Electric pickup maker Rivian - the so-called Tesla of trucks - said on Monday that it raised $1.3 billion in new funding , the startup's fourth major investment round this year. The huge investment , led by fund manager T. Rowe Price, included asset manager BlackRock and existing investors Amazon and Ford Motor. The investment round positions the Plymouth, Michigan-based company as one of the better-financed players in a crowded electric vehicle market where Elon Musk’s Tesla is the most established player. In early 2019, Amazon led a $700 million investment round in Rivian. The e-commerce giant also ordered 100,000 of its electric delivery vehicles. And Ford invested $500 million in Rivian in April, and plans to help it begin production in Normal, Illinois in 2020. Founded 10 years ago, Rivian plans to debut an all-electric pickup truck starting late next year. Prior to Monday’s announcement, Rivian had raised $2.2 billion from investors, according to investor website PitchBook, and was valued at an estimated $5 billion to $7 billion.

* Women's groups decry top court decision on #MeToo case
Women's rights groups in Korea have condemned the top court's decision to revoke a lower court ruling that jailed a senior prosecutor in a high-profile #MeToo case. Former prosecutor Ahn Tae-geun, 53, was released from jail after the Supreme Court ruling Thursday. He was detained in January last year for unfairly transferring a female prosecutor to a remote provincial post after she tried to speak up on how Ahn groped her at a funeral. Sexual harassment was not included in the charges due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. The Supreme Court overturned Ahn's two-year jail sentence saying his actions regarding the victim's transfer were within legal boundaries and could not be seen as an abuse of authority. The ruling was a blow to women's rights groups as Ahn's case was symbolic of the country's #MeToo movement in 2018. It was also unexpected as both lower courts had ruled against him. "The court is basically saying they see no fault with an undeniable case of retaliatory demotion of personnel inside the prosecution," a #MeToo movement coalition of some 300 women rights groups said in a statement Friday. "The Supreme Court has quashed the slight possibility of bringing to light a sexual harassment case covered up by a massive organization." Seo Ji-hyun, the plaintiff who went public with her allegations on local television two years ago, said she was baffled by the court decision.
* Court denies arrest warrant for Seungri
A Seoul court on Monday again denied an arrest warrant for Seungri, the disgraced former Bigbang member accused of overseas gambling and procuring prostitutes for investors. Following a two-and-a-half hour hearing, the Seoul Central District Court dismissed the prosecution's request to detain Seungri, who was at the center of a major sex and drug scandal that roiled the K-pop industry last year. The court said it didn't deem detention of Seungri to be necessary or justified after looking into his role and involvement in wrongdoings, and also considered his attitude toward the prosecution's investigation. It is the second time the court has turned down law enforcement authorities' bid to detain the 29-year-old. A similar attempt by police in May fell through, with the court citing "room for dispute" and little concern that Seungri could destroy evidence.
