!!! Coronavirus Worldwide !!!

!!! A state-by-state breakdown of US coronavirus cases !!!

========================================================================

(1) How long does coronavirus survive on different surfaces?

Q: Does the cruise ship report imply that viruses survive up to 17 days on surfaces?
Dr Julia Marcus: A CDC investigation of the cruise ship found evidence of viral RNA in cabins that hadn¡¯t yet been cleaned. But to be clear, that just means the virus was detectable – not that it was viable or that contact with those services would have been able to infect someone. (Editor¡¯s note: RNA, or ribonucleic acid, carries the virus¡¯s genetic information.)

Q: Have I already had coronavirus? How would I know and what should I do?
Dr Akiko Iwasaki: It just means that there are parts of the virus that still remain. The virus needs many other components to be intact. If you have bits and pieces of RNA, that¡¯s not going to make a virus, you need an entire intact genome. Just because you had a little piece of RNA doesn¡¯t mean that there¡¯s an infection.

Q: How long can the virus survive on surfaces?
Marcus: The New England Journal of Medicine just published a study that tested how long the virus can remain stable on different kinds of surfaces within a controlled laboratory setting. They found that it was still detectable on copper for up to four hours, on cardboard for up to 24 hours, and on plastic and steel for up to 72 hours. But it¡¯s important to note that the amount of virus decreased rapidly over time on each of those surfaces. And so the risk of infection from touching them would probably decrease over time as well.

Q: Could you become infected from just a single particle of Covid-19?
Iwasaki: There¡¯s a certain amount of viral particle that you need to be exposed to become infected. If you just had one viral particle on your finger, it¡¯s unlikely that you¡¯re going to be infected. Some viruses are very potent, you only need like 10 particles to get infected, while others you [may] need millions. The fewer viral particles you¡¯re exposed to, the less likely you¡¯re going to get infected. That¡¯s why the amount of virus on a surface is important.

(2) Millions of Americans are about to lose their health insurance in a pandemic

The tragic effects of our battle with the novel coronavirus are seemingly endless. But arguably the most mind-blowing is this: the very pandemic that threatens to infect and kill millions is simultaneously causing many to also lose their health coverage at their gravest time of need. Here¡¯s how: the virus has caused a public health crisis so severe that people have been forced to stay home, causing businesses to shutter and lay off workers. And with roughly half of Americans getting their health insurance from their employer, these layoffs mean not only losing their income but also their medical coverage. In other words, just as our need for medical care skyrockets in the face of a global pandemic, fewer will have health insurance or be able to afford it. According to one recent report, the cost of treatment for Covid-19 can run around $35,000. As the patient in the report exclaimed: ¡°I was pretty sticker-shocked. I personally don¡¯t know anybody who has that kind of money.¡±

(3) Pastor arrested for violating rules amid virus outbreak

Florida officials have arrested the pastor of a megachurch after detectives say he held two Sunday services with hundreds of people and violated a safer-at-home order in place to limit the spread of the coronavirus. According to jail records, Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne turned himself in to authorities Monday afternoon in Hernando County, where he lives. He was charged with unlawful assembly and violation of a public health emergency order. Bail was set at $500, according to the jail¡¯s website. Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a news conference Monday that he negotiated with the attorney of Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne to turn himself in to authorities in Hernando County. His church is located in Tampa.

(4) What you need to do to get your government stimulus check

Anyone earning up to $75,000 in adjusted gross income and who has a Social Security number will receive a $1,200 payment. That means married couples filing joint returns will receive the full payment — $2,400 — if their adjusted gross income, which what you report on your taxes, is under $150,000. The payment steadily declines for those who make more. Those earning more than $99,000, or $198,000 for joint filers, are not eligible. The thresholds are slightly different for those who file as a head of household. Parents will also receive $500 for each qualifying child.

(5) S. Korea to grant 'disaster relief money' for households, vows extra budget plan

The South Korean government will grant "emergency disaster relief money" to a majority of the country's households in a one-off stimulus program to help with the economic impact of the coronavirus crisis, President Moon Jae-in said Monday. He also unveiled a plan to seek another supplementary budget during a third session of the emergency economic council at the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae. "The government has decided to pay emergency disaster relief money" directly to South Koreans struggling to make ends meet due to the pandemic, he said. Under the scheme, 1 million won (US$820) would be given to a four-person household, of which gross income stays at or below 70 percent of the total. It represents an earnings limit for the aid program, meaning individuals with relatively low income would get paid in accordance with the standard. The finance ministry is expected to make relevant details public later in the day. Around 14 million households comprising 35 million people would be eligible for the aid.
