[Essay/¿µÀÛ] (T-123) Should people read only those books about reality?

 Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People should read only those books that are about real events, real people, and established facts. Use specific reasons and details to support your opinion.
 
All of the millions of books published over the years can be divided into two major categories: fiction and nonfiction. Some people think that people should read only books about real and factual subjects, but I disagree. We should read fiction as well as nonfiction because fiction can teach us about life in our world and help us to develop imagination.

To begin with, fictional stories can teach us important lessons about life and the world we live in. Non-fiction is very useful for informing readers of the hard facts and statistics concerning people around the world, but fiction takes information about people and uses it to show the good and bad deeds that humans are capable of. Pearl buck used a poor Chinese family to illustrate the importance of family ties and responsibility in ¡®The Good Earth¡¯. Philip Dick showed the dangers of letting technology take precedence over real life in ¡®Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep¡¯. Dick pointed out that just because a robot could look like a living creature, it does not mean that they posses the same emotions and morals that make a creature truly alive. The importance of family and lessons about the human condition are just a couple of the lessons learned in fiction.

Another positive aspect of fictional stories is that they help develop a person¡¯s imagination, which is a source of creativity. Countless novels have been written about any given subject. However, authors find new ways to present the subject in order to make their stories different from others. Finding a new aspect of a subject and describing an old idea in a new way are some of the skills involved in writing fiction. For readers, fiction shows them that it is possible to put a new twist on things and be totally original, which is one of the aspects of being creative. Readers can use that skill in their everyday lives and in nearly any field, where competition with others is a daily activity. Hence, reading fiction can promote free thought in life, and this becomes the source of creativity.

In conclusion, while there are many benefits to be had from reading nonfiction, reading fiction can also be helpful in one¡¯s life. Fiction can give us an opportunity to learn important lessons about life. In addition, reading fiction can also help develop a person¡¯s imagination. The best recipe for reading is to read both fiction and nonfiction, which will supply a reader with a more well-rounded view of the world we live in.
