Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is more important for students to study history and literature than it is for them to study science and mathematics. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

People have long debated over which is more important to study; the sciences or the humanities. Some people believe that studying history and literature is more important than studying science and mathematics. However, I disagree with trying to put one subject over another because each field has its own special uses and values for a person¡¯s education.

Science and mathematics have a great impact on human progress. The last hundred years brought many inventions and discoveries such as cars, airplanes, telephones and electric appliances. Improvements in technology have made our lives more convenient. Furthermore, more now than ever in human history can we see technological advancements that are made based on science and mathematics. For instance, almost all businesses use computers to contact with other companies around the world, store information and run the company. No one denies the fact that all of these results came from science and mathematics. Indeed, a modern person with no grasp of basic science and mathematics is considered underdeveloped intellectually in modern society; therefore, students need to understand natural science in order to function well in today¡¯s society.

Although science and mathematics are important subjects in our modern lives, people in modern society will surely suffer if they do not study history and literature. By studying history, people from every society are able to understand, not only out past and where we came from, but why people act the way they do today in terms of politics, religion, and cultural characteristics. While history reveals our past, literature is an ongoing mode of development for a society. It is important for a society to continue their creation of new forms of art, including literature. Literature is a record of human society that is priceless for future generations. Technology is wonderful and convenient, but without an outlet for expression and creativity, humans become nothing more than robots themselves.

In conclusion, I think the argument concerning which is more important between science and mathematics and history and literature is a fruitless argument. Science and technology is essential in the education of students in that it helps then function in modern society. History and literature are necessary for us to understand the world we live in and to continue enhancing the cultural aspects of humanity. Therefore, one is no more important than the other, and the import thing is to be knowledgeable in both in order to have a well-rounded education.
