[Essay/¿µÀÛ] (T-168) is there more need for land to be left in its natural condition?

In your country, is there more need for land to be left in its natural condition or is there more need for land to be developed for housing and industry? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Every country in the world is subject to limited land supplies and arguments flare on how to best allocate the land available. While there are people who believe nature should be respected and nature reserves expanded, others believe it is more important to develop the land for industrial usage and additional housing projects to meet the demands of a growing population. I believe the land should be used for more housing projects and building industrial infrastructure. Countries need to be able to meet both the expanding needs of industry and eliminate housing shortages or inflated real-estate prices.

First, nations need to be able to eliminate housing shortages. New housing projects are critical and land development is an easy and reliable solution. While cities such as New York have tried alternative solutions in the past such as rent control, the most effective solution is market forces. An increased availability of housing means citizens will enjoy better housing quality and lower prices due to less market demand. By developing additional land, city planners will also eliminate the need to build increasingly taller skyscrapers. This contributes to increased safety for citizens in the event of a natural disaster and allows more room for cities to develop beautification projects.

Second, industry requires space to develop. Manufactured goods may be produced locally but not necessarily designated for domestic consumption or use. As cities become increasingly competitive and global, exports increase a nations profit and prestige. International trade helps cities attract citizens and business. However, without the land needed for expansion and growth, cities may collapse and countries may suffer economic recession. People are aware of the increasing costs associated with modern life and opportunities that present themselves, regardless of location or even country, can encourage people to immigrate elsewhere.

In conclusion, while being able to have both natural scenery and sufficient space for industrial needs would be the best solutions, this is not necessarily realistic. Without developing existing land to encourage industrial expansion and meet population demands, a nation can suffer serious economic consequences. A prosperous city or nation requires the best use of all resources.
