* 동명사의 태 *
동명사에도 태(수동태/능동태)가 있다.
I cannot bear his treating me in this manner. (능동태 - 나는 그가 나를 이렇게 다루는 것을 참을 수 없다.)
I cannot bear being treated in this matter. (수동태 - 나는 이렇게 취급받는 것을 참을 수 없다.)
He insisted on (my) being sent to the position in Washington.
= He insisted that I (should) be sent to the position in Washington.
* Examples *
1. 나는 연설 부탁을 받는 것을 좋아하지 않는다
I don't like being asked to make a speech.
2. 그 여자는 배가 표류되는 것을 막으려고 애썼다.
She tried to keep the boat from being drifted away.
3. 그를 구조할 가망은 없다. (그가 (누군가에 의해) 구조될 가망은 없다.)
There is no hope of his being saved.
* 독해 *
1. A man who picks up and reads any book that he happens to come across, is in great danger of becoming weary of reading or being poisoned by it.
* come across = meet, find/ become weary of = become tired(sick) of = ~에 싫증나다/ poison = 해독을 입히다
(해석) 우연히 만나는 어떤 책이나 주워서 읽는 사람은 독서에 싫증이 나거나, 독서 때문에 해독을 입을 커다란 위험에 놓여 있다.
2. Going by railroad I do not consider as traveling at all (= I do not consider "going by railroad" as "traveling" at all) ; it is merely being sent to a place, and very little different from becoming a parcel.
* consider A as B = A를 B로 간주하다/ merely = only = 단지/ parcel = 소포
(해석) 기차로 가는 것을 나는 전혀 여행으로 생각하지 않는다. 그것은 다만 어떤 고장으로 발송 당하는 거이며 소포짝이 되는 것과 별다름이 없다.
동명사에도 태(수동태/능동태)가 있다.
